(Note this post has been extensively edited since first posted. That's what I get for working on it so late at night sigh.) I'm putting all of this post under a cut for onsite readers who don't want to read predictions for next season of The Pitt.
Some heavier musings on The Pitt season 2 finale

I find myself disappointed that I didn't like the s2 finale of The Pitt as much as I wanted to. I've loved the whole season, but not so much this episode despite some truly heartwrenching scenes. I accept that these reasons are specific only to me, though. My issues:

1. The dead body in chairs.

I know this was probably meant to be a bit of (very dark) humour, but it sure hits different when there have been several incidents in the past, and one currently ongoing coroner's inquest, on this very topic in Canada. One death occurred just a few months ago: a 44-year-old man with severe chest pain waited 8 hours in an Alberta ER and died of a heart attack almost immediately after entering the ward. The current inquest concerns a young Indigenous woman in Ontario who collapsed from sepsis in an ER waiting room after 2 visits over 2 days, and died in 2021.

The 2 scenes left a bad taste and I can only hope the writers will examine this issue with more depth and, yes, empathy in s3.

2. "I'm your emergency contact and I don't want to be contacted."
( Cut for discussion of suicidal depression. )

comments

What, are we talking in code? About Robby and Langdon's conversation in the s2 premiere

One thing I adore about The Pitt is how the show uses foreshadowing and imagery to reflect the characters' state of mind. The big worry about Robby this season is that he's clearly not in a good mental place before he leaves for a 3 month sabbatical. Eg in the opening scene, a helmetless Robby on a motorcycle speeds past a rushing ambulance on a double line (no passing) over the crest of the bridge in a blindspot. It’s reckless at best, lethal at worst. Clearly this man is not well.

What caught my attention in the premiere was ( this scene of Robby running into Langdon in s2e1. )

comments

Yesterday I met a pretty awesome achievement on AO3: 25,000 total kudos since AO3 introduced kudos in 2010! It took 15 years and 15 days, which is a neat coincidence. And reaching 25k in 2025 is another. :-D

So I celebrated ... by slipping on a patch of ice and breaking my right arm above my wrist. /0\ Long story short, I'm currently waiting on surgery to insert a plate to stabilize all the little pieces.
Art commission/info phishing spammers on AO3

The art commission/info phishing spammers on AO3 have raised a level. On Dec 18, I received a guest comment stating "great story" on one of my more recent fics.

I moderate comments to deter bad actors. I approved this comment and thanked the commenter, because I do try to assume good faith from guests. They followed up with this reply this morning:
Btw I’ve got a few character concept ideas to share! Where do you usually talk about stuff like this?

I reported their reply and initial comment as spam and deleted them. However, the spammer didn't list discord/instagram handles this time. It might be a sign they're trying to branch out to other platforms. So beware and don't give out contact info, especially email addresses.

(I list other locations where I'm active, as well as my Transformative Works policy on my AO3 profile. But no one seems to read those.)

Guest comments can be taken care of with the spam button. If/when spammers take out AO3 accounts, report them as Spambots to PAC:

1. Open up the offending comment thread to report the spammer. If you moderate comments, you don't need to approve the comment before reporting it, just open up its comment page.

2. Click on the "Policy Questions & Abuse Reports" link at the bottom of the comment page.

3. Put "Spambot" in the "Brief summary of Terms of Service violation (required)" field of the New Abuse Report page.

4. Double-check the URL to confirm it's the correct comment thread page you're reporting.

5. In the Details box, put "This is a spambot, their username is AO3username." Then send it. The turnaround is generally within a few days. PAC sends you a copy of the report, and the results when it's removed.

I really do recommend moderating AO3 comments these days.

comments

I not only passed my Light (75k) pledge goal in May, but I also passed the GYWO Modest (150k) pledge on Dec 11. Along the way I finished and posted the most works for any year I've written under GYWO. Six of those I finished during a 4 week WIP finishing spree between Nov 15-Dec 13.

Furthermore, I'm pushing up against another significant GYWO goal. As of December 18, I've officially written 852,249 words for GYWO. Which means, I have only 147,751 (!) words until I reach 1 million total words written!

I can complete 1 million words written for GYWO entirely in 2026!

Maybe.
( With caveats. )

comments

Hey, writers of The Pitt fandom? Let's talk about tagging fics on AO3 for a minute? The Pitt (TV) and The Pitt (TV) RPF fandom tags are for different fandoms. Most writers tag fandoms correctly (thank you!), but I'm also seeing an increase in writers who incorrectly use both tags in their fics, which is really not ideal.

Here are some quick rules of thumb for fandom tagging:

If the fic only includes characters from the TV show (eg Robby Robinavitch, Jack Abbot, Dennis Whitaker, Dana Evans etc), please use only The Pitt (TV) fandom tag.

If the fic only includes actors from the TV show (eg Noah Wyle, Shawn Hatosy, Gerran Howell, Katherine Lanasa etc), please use only The Pitt (TV) RPF fandom tag. (RPF = Real Person Fiction)

Please only use both tags if the fic mixes both actors and characters in the same fic. (Eg, Shawn Hatosy and Jack Abbot switch places, where Abbot ends up in the real world while Hatosy finds himself in the TV world.)

Otherwise, what happens is:

a) Mistagging inflates the numbers of fics in the (much smaller) "The Pitt (TV) RPF" tag. This makes the correctly tagged RPF fics harder to find.

b) Mistagging messes up fandom eligibility for fic exchanges that use total number of fics in the fandom tag to determine whether the fandom can be included in the exchange. That means the much smaller fandom gets excluded from exchanges it would otherwise qualify for. That's not fair for the creators in the smaller fandom.

Right now, 10 of 16 fics in "The Pitt (TV) RPF" tag are also tagged with "The Pitt (TV)." Except 9 of those 10 fics include characters only, not actors. Those 9 fics don't belong in the RPF tag.

c) Fans who don't want to read RPF may start to avoid works in "The Pitt (TV)" tag that are also tagged with "The Pitt (TV) RPF." This may work against authors who tag for both.

Tl;dr, these fandom tags are not interchangeable. If you're trying to increase visibility of your fics to readers, I honestly do understand why, but fandom mistagging isn't the answer.

comments

I think the art commission/information scammer spambots on AO3 are becoming more sophisticated. The last two fics I posted, (A Time Too Far and Birds of passage, you and me (we fly instinctively), both saw spambot comments almost as soon as I posted. Two I received for "A Time Too Far" were fairly recognizable as such. (The third was the critical comment spambot type that's also running around.)

However, I took note at the spambot I got for "Birds of passage" last night. It arrived minutes after I posted my fic. The comment itself was an art commission spam, with all the tells that AO3 describes in Protect Your Contact Information From Scanners.

Except, unlike my previous spambot visitors, this one had filled out a authentic-looking AO3 profile page. Also, it had joined AO3 the day before, while most of my previous spambot visitors have joined up the same day as my fic post.

The comment was duly reported; I'm waiting for PAC to confirm spambot detected. I also changed my profile page to say I no longer accept offers until further notice. I list where I can be reached for questions on my profile. Dreamwidth and Tumblr are the only two sites where I actively participate online.

Edit (Nov 18): Spambot detection confirmed. I got another guest one today that was gibberish; that one got deleted too. I'm starting to wonder if AO3 should go members-only across the site, though that also would be unfair to all the amazing guests who read.

comments
